| Strengths: |
First of all, I also have a son with learning disability and dyslexia so I walk that rope as well. I have resources in both areas and as other families might be affected in the same way, I can offer support. |
Why I became a
Rescue Angel: |
There is no support for families in this area. It is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, only you don't even know what you are looking for. I heard of the diet thru a chance encounter swimming laps in the pool! Thank God for Jenny McCarthy, who has so bravely come forward about her son. I have a lot of knowledge about therapies, schools, diet, supplements and where to find it all in Denver. I would love to pass it on.
Also, I offer a different branch of hope, as my son was not diagnosed until he was four. We have been doing biomedical plus RDI, social skills and speech for five years. He has had his BEST year this year - age 9 in third grade! So is my son recovered? Not 100% but there is always hope and room to improve. There is a lot of talk that if you don't start before age 5, you are a goner. Yes, early is best, but my son is living proof that a child can significantly improve and be pulled off special education later in school. |

| Strengths: |
The GFCF Diet, supplements, problems in school, or anything I may have mentioned in the therapy section above. I can also suggest DAN! Doctors and nutritionists in the area. |
Why I became a
Rescue Angel: |
I want to give strength to parents who are skeptical about biomedical intervention. Initially, it can be very overwhelming and scary. My son is living proof that the life ahead can be a promising one filled with hope and recovery. |
| Child's Symptoms: |
Grant before intervention: no eye contact, toe walking, acting deaf, loss of all words at 13 mos., terrible light-green, soft stools, spinning in circles, flipping light switches, over stuffing himself with food (gluten and dairy), zombie-like behavior, no interest in older sibling or friends, ate sand and dirt, ate non-food items, sucked on clothing, couldn't tolerate noise, hypo-sensitive (couldn't feel pain, hot or cold), no emotional contact with family members, no pointing or gesturing, no response to his name being called, was unable to perform simple tasks (bring mommy the ball) pretty much most of the typical red flags. |
| Helpful Therapies: |
The county suggested I get Grant diagnosed when he was 17 months old. The day after the county suggested he may have autism, I put him on the GFCF diet. (I basically freaked out and was fortunate enough to have a friend who told me about an article by Karyn Seroussi and her child's recovery.) Behavioral changes occurred within 2 days. He began pointing, gesturing and started taking interest in his brother and the world around him. I was astounded in the transformation and was convinced it was an important key in his recovery. It took 6 mos. to get into Childrens Hospital for testing. I'm so glad I didn't wait for a diagnosis before putting Grant on the diet. Each day is precious when you're considering early intervention. The hospital diagnosed him with PDD/NOS but I believe he would have had full-blown autism had I not put him on the diet when I did. I might add the doctors told me the diet was dangerous and vaccines were safe. I was insulted and I think I may have laughed in their faces. I was on a mission and refused to listen to anyone who had views that were clearly different from a Warrior Moms I was reading about on the Internet. I got a DAN! doctor and we started testing. Grant was a mess, high metals, yeast, parasites, you name it. Since he was so young, it was difficult to get him to take the 26 supplements he needed daily. After many bribes, we got the pills down, and watched him improve even more. Glutathione was also essential. We started NAET to help him absorb and assimilate the vitamins and nutrients better. We chelated (transdermal) when he was 6. After two weeks of die-off, Grant emerged a different child more of the fog had lifted. Although there is a lot of controversy about chelation, I absolutely believe it was necessary to get rid of the heavy metals that were accumulating in his little body. We chelated later (orally) when he was 9 after watching slip him in school. Once again, Grant was back. We now try to give him epsom salt baths whenever we can. We also have an Alimtox foot detox machine. Grant is now 10. I don't personally know any children who've been on the DAN! protocol this long but all the hard work is certainly worth it. For the most part, you would never suspect there was a issue with him. He is a grade ahead in reading and math. He's played tackle football for the last two years and is an expert skier. He is a sweet, considerate boy who thanks me for absolutely everything. If only I could get the rest of the family to do that, I'd be in heaven! He continues to grow socially with each passing year and has many friends. The symptom we still see surface is the ability to control his emotions like a typical child. He tends to get upset more than most. We've found that a small daily dose of Diflucan and GABA in the morning and the evening have helped a great deal in helping to keep his emotions in check. When he really starts slipping emotionally, we know it's time to check metals. It's our red flag. I strongly encourage anyone with a child on the spectrum to get a DAN! doctor and follow the protocol whole-heartedly. There is so much hope for these children if you are willing to commit to a change in lifestyle. You don't have a minute to lose! Start now and I'll be there if you need information, ideas, or someone who will listen to you vent, cry or scream. Believe me, I've been there and life can get better. |
