About Robert (Bob) Rasmussen:

Bob graduated Engineering school (BSCE) from the University of Utah in 1983.  Upon graduating he worked for Fortune 50 company Honeywell based in Minneapolis, MN as a Sales Engineer.
After a ten-year career with Honeywell, he was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and help found a high-tech R&D company based in his home-town of Alpine, Utah.  One of the first products this R&D Company developed was an advanced wheelchair cushion designed to prevent decubitis ulcers in paraplegic and quadriplegic wheelchair users.  The prior state of the art wheelchair cushion used a fluid material, which effectively relieved the pressure points to prevent sores, but there were two major deficiencies in the design.  First, the cushions were very heavy and second, it was possible for the user to sink all the way through the fluid material, causing the user to “bottom out” onto the hard base below.  When the user bottomed out, the user would be at significant risk of developing a ulcer.  Bob’s design eliminated both problems, cutting the weight of the cushion by two/thirds, and completely eliminated any risk of bottoming out.

His work in the wheelchair industry allowed Bob to consult with some of the leading physical therapists and doctors in the Country, and launched him into his 25+ year career in high-tech cushioning.  During this time, he learned the difficult challenge to properly comfort and support the human body.

After selling the wheelchair cushion technology to one of their distributors, Bob returned to the R&
D company he helped found, and the Company turned its attention to developing a cushioning replacement for foam with the first target market being the mattress industry.  That effort resulted in the development of another advanced cushioning material that later became known as Intelli-Gel.  After an unsuccessful attempt to commercialize the technology, Bob acquired the rights for Intelli-Gel® for use in the consumer field of mattresses, toppers and pillows; and with his partner Shawn Clark, formed Advanced Comfort Technologies Inc. in 1998.

Bob led the engineering team that developed the IntelliBED product line.  Instead of following the industry standard of building beds to fit pricing structures, IntelliBED focused on building mattresses to help problem sleepers.  Special designs include mattresses for sufferers of back-pain, hip and shoulder pain, fibromyalgia and other conditions that prevent users from getting the healing sleep they need.  Among many medical professionals, poor sleep is one of their biggest concerns.

Intelli-Gel is a true breakthrough in cushioning.  First, instead of simply compressing like foam, Intelli-Gel uses the engineering principle of “column buckling” to add a second degree of cushioning.  Protruding hips and shoulders that experience significant pressure points cause the Intelli-Gel support members to buckle or collapse, relieving pressure points.  The technology is so effective at relieving pressure that it has been shown to cure stage 4 decubitis ulcers.  The benefit of this is it significantly increases comfort and reduces tossing and turning.

Intelli-Gel is also among the most durable cushioning materials ever developed.  While foam begins to break down almost immediately rendering foam based mattresses incapable of providing proper support after two to three years, Intelli-Gel based mattresses provide consistent comfort and support for 20+ years.

Intelli-Gel is completely non-toxic.  Unfortunately, the mattress industry is unregulated when comes to the safety of the materials used in mattresses.  Every mattress built in the US, including children’s and baby mattress must meet certain burn standards, and many of the materials used are known carcinogens and toxic.  Non-toxic sleep surfaces are a top priority of IntelliBED.

Instead of distributing its products through traditional mattress and furniture stores, IntelliBED markets on-line and relies on recommendations from doctors and medical professionals and professional organizations.
